Happy Birthday Daddy!

Zach turned 25 this past Sunday, yea I'm a little behind. We had a lot of fun celebrating with family, definitely was a super busy weekend. I am so thankful that this man is alive and I hope I get many more years with him. In honor of 25 years of life, I'm going to share 25 memories of Zach:
1. Zach was a CHUBBY baby, I mean really chubby, chubbier than Annie chubby.
2. He grew out of that chubby phase quick and then was super skinny. His freshman year of high school he wrestled in the 112 weight class. He was LITTLE!
3. Zach was a wrestler in high school, by the time I met him he got bigger. He was wrestling in the 152 weight class his senior year, when we started dating.

4. Zach was ranked #1 in the state in his weight class senior year, he was good.
5. The first time Zach and I actually talked, he hollered at me at a soccer game at my high school. It was a tournament, so a bunch of high schools were there, including his. It was, I think, the second day of school. As me and a friend stopped to talk to one of his friends we knew, he yelled at me and asked me if I did my homework. Too bad we hadn't even been assigned any homework.
6. In the next few days after the soccer game, Zach got the courage to ask me to call him. It was one day after class, we had second period AP Psychology together. (We did go to different high schools, but we took our AP/vocational classes.) My response to him after he asked me to call him was, "why don't you call me instead." Then he got my number, that lucky boy.
7. He eventually called me and asked if I wanted to hang out with him and his friend. So I then call my friend and make a plan to go meet them. As I was heading over to my friend's house to pick her up, I got into my first car wreck. Not fun. I rammed into a van (that had two small children), then swerved and ran into a ditch. Overall damage wasn't too bad and nobody got hurt.
8. The first time I went to Zach's house, I got lost. We were in different cars and he was going to meet me at his house. I called him to tell him I was lost, then my phone died. I tried to see if I could find my way, but after an hour, I decided to go back home. He was in my driveway waiting for me. What a sweetie.
9. On our 3 month anniversary, Zach put rose petals all throughout my house (with my parents permission) and led me into my bathroom where he had present for me. He had named a star after me (yea, that's completely fake, but very sweet at the time). He definitely was very serious about our relationship, me on the other still not so sure if I wanted to date anybody. He stole my heart soon after this...
10. Zach and I went to his senior prom together. Although we went to different high schools, our prom night was on the same night, so we went to his. We had a lot of fun, although he wasn't a very good dancer. I still fell in love with him anyways...

11. I was a cheerleader in high school, Zach would come watch me cheer at the football games. I loved to go watch him wrestle as well. One day I was really frustrated in cheerleading practice and he was at my school for a wrestling match, so I left my practice to go watch him. I got in trouble, my coach yelled at me.
12. We went to the lake with one of our friends and were riding jet skis. You would think Zach would be doing all the tricks and throwing us off, but actually I did. I threw us off and we both almost got knocked out. We definitely had our breaths knocked out, but Zach had to save the jet ski because the safety stop slipped off my wrist. He's such a man, he sucked it up and saved the ski after I almost killed us.
13. Zach and I worked as lifeguards together for 2 summers. The first summer we worked at Old Town Country Club, the second summer we worked at Forsyth Country Club. At Old Town is when I realized how great of a father he would be, he was so good with the kids. We both adored this little girl named Baker, that's how Ellie got her middle name.
14. Zach had a purple truck in high school and most of college. It wasn't very practical since it didn't have an extended cab and that it only sat 2 people. I loved that truck, it sure was purple though.
15. Zach and I went to Grand Cayman with my family the summer after our senior year of high school. It was so much fun. The one memory I have is "swimming" with the sting rays. That was definitely a once in a life experience. I hope that some day we can go swimming with dolphins!
16. In college, Zach and I lived in either the same dorm or in the same apartment complex all 4 years. It was nice being able to walk to our rooms/apartment to hang out.
17. Zach used to love Bojangles. I think if we stilled lived 5 minutes from the Bojangles on Western Blvd, he might still love it. He seriously would eat there at least 3 times a week. Good thing that stopped, he might die of a heart attack if that continued.
18. Zach is a terrible singer, he has absolutely no tune. He loves to call you and sing to you if you are one of his really good friends. This makes you feel extra special, and I love how he can't carry a tune. Personally, I think it makes it even more special.
19. Our junior year of college we lived in an apartment complex right next to Lake Johnson. I could take about 20 steps from the back of my building and be on the path around the lake. We would walk/run all the time. One time we decided to take a canoe out on the lake. We also decided to take Kayla (our dog) with us. We started to freak out because Kayla wouldn't stay still, so we were rocking everywhere. We decided to go to the shore and put her inside. When we got close to the shore, Kayla jumped out. Zach started freaking out and told her to get back in the boat, she wouldn't. She kept jumping around in the water and over the canoe. I was laughing hysterically, Zach couldn't be any madder. He was so upset with both me and Kayla, he didn't think it was funny at all. He did not like the possibility of falling into the lake or our dog going crazy in the water.
20. Zach flew to California to propose to me on summer project. I thought I was going up to the lighthouse with my friends to take some pictures, but that was not the case. I was shocked, because although I definitely wanted a proposal that summer, I thought he for sure wasn't going to do it in Cali. I was wrong, and absolutely loved getting engaged in such a beautiful place.
21. Zach was extremely nervous when he proposed to me, he also shed a few tears. It was such a special moment because I definitely had never seen him so nervous. I got to see how much I meant to him, and he wrote me an amazing poem. One day I might share it with you.
22. On our wedding day, Zach gave me his journal that he had been writing in the past year. I read the entry on our wedding day and remembered it being so very special. Too bad I lost the journal the next day. I have no idea what happened to it.
23. On our honeymoon in Capri, Italy (yea, it was amazing), Zach had planned a taxi tour on the Almafi Coast. That morning I woke up and realized I had an UTI. I thought I caught it pretty early, so I decided that I would probably be fine. We were in a taxi with a tour guide. The guide was going to take us to some amazing places. Our first stop was Pompei. Well as soon as we got to Pompei, I was in serious pain. I soon realized that I couldn't make it through the day. I hesitantly broke the news to Zach, but Zach couldn't have been more than thrilled. He thought our tour guide was one of the most annoying men alive and didn't want to put up with him anymore. The hundreds of dollars he spent on this wasn't worth putting up with this guy. I personally thought the guy was extremely nice, oh well. At least my UTI made somebody happy.

.
24. Zach's favorite things this year (it seems they change every few years): Starbucks, Biscuitville, Strawberry Rhubarb Pie, M&M's, tiramisu, ice cream, chicken pan pie, iPhone, reading books, and the tv series West Wing. Now when I talk about favorite things, I mean that he wants these things ALWAYS. He is borderline obsessed with these things. He's definitely a passionate person, and it shows.
25. Zach is an amazing father and husband. I'll never forget how he steps up and helps me when I need it. After Ainsley was born, he was a life saver. He would take Ellie out for coffee, biscuits, playtime at the kid's museum, or to the store. He constantly continues to do this when I need a break. The little moments are what stick out in my mind the most. He works at home when he's not traveling, so throughout the day he pops in to see what we are doing. He is constantly reading a book, or laughing and loving on both of the girls. I love how his heart melts for them and for me. He pretty much rocks my world.

These are just a few of many, and many more to come. I love you Zach!

A Day of Loss

Yesterday was a devastating day for my church family. We had a lot of loss, including the loss of our college pastor's son who was born 14 weeks premature. Please pray for these families (the Atwoods, the Youngs, and the Henns) in my church, check out the details here: A Pretty Devastating Day.

It's hard to find good in so many situations, but I am reminded by what the world defines as "good" is completely different than the good that we know as followers of Christ. Death is hard for us on earth because we loose a loved one, and we tend to forget what happens after death. Death is not a sad thing, but a glorious thing for those who have died that know the Lord. They are now with the Lord, completely healed, in no pain, in complete happiness, bringing glory to God. What a wonderful thing. However, I can't ignore the face that those who do not know the Lord, death is a devastation. Each one of us deserves eternal damnation, but because of the love our God has for us, we can be saved. For those that believe in Christ, the one who lived the life we should have lived and died the death we deserve, we now can have eternal life. What a glorious thing.

Our Savior loves us and I can only pray that these families will find comfort in the love we have received from our Lord and that God will be glorified in each one of these losses. I am praying for each of these families to receive:

comfort from the Lord,
"Though you have made me see troubles, many and bitter, you will restore my life again; from the depths of the earth you will again bring me up. You will increase my honor and comfort me once again." Psalms 71:20-21

the peace of God,
"And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:7

and glory through their suffering...
"I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us." Romans 8:18

to God be the glory.

Silly Annie

The other day, Zach had a little fun with Annie.
He put Mr. Potato Head's glasses on her!
She didn't mind one bit at all, she even kept them on for about 10 minutes!
She finally decided to take them off.

She's such a sport, love my Annie!

For the Young Mother

A friend shared this article with me, For the Young Mother: Ministry, Guilt, and Season of Life. I found this article very encouraging. It refreshed my mind again of my mission and encouraged me to reevaluate my days, instruction to my kids, and commitments.

I loved how it encouraged us mothers to "not waste our guilt, but instead listen to it and evaluate it." This is a must read for the Christian young mothers out there.

Independence Weekend

We had a jammed pack weekend. Saturday we headed up for our annual July 4th family reunion at my uncle's lake house. We didn't have everybody there, but still had a lot of fun. We got to eat some yummy bbq, ride on a boat, have some fun on the water, and eat some pie, cobbler, and cake. Great time with family. We brought our camera, but didn't get but a few pictures. Here are just two:
Aunt Patsy and I conversing:

My cousin Jared, love his hair!:

Sunday evening we headed to a friend's house for a cookout. Delicious food and fun times with friends. Ellie had a lot of fun playing in the pool with Addison and her new friend, Claire. She also got to hold a live worm for the first time. She was very hesitant at first, even after Addison and Claire were touching/holding them, but eventually she decided to go for it with much encouragement. She ended up thinking it was very interesting and fun.
Claire, Ellie, and Addison (Ellie refused to look at the camera):

Ellie holding a worm for the first time:

Monday we had a day at the pool, then an evening at the local park. Holly Springs was hosting an Indepedence Day celebration. Ellie was able to bounce in a inflatable thing, color, sing/dance, and sit in a fire truck. We didn't stay for the fireworks (which I'm not happy about), but instead went home for ice cream. Turned out to be a great weekend, although the girls are definitely exhausted. Next year we definitely are going to see some fireworks, daddy promised me!

This Lady Does Not Make Sense

Read an article the other day on Al Mohler's blog: When Feminism Kills -- Abortion as 'The Lesser Evil'. What did it say? This lady who is pro-choice believes that abortion is murder, and still doesn't change her mind. She thinks abortion is killing an innocent child, but thinks that a woman's choice is greater than life. CRAZY.

I think she's just an idiot in this way of thinking, a little strong word used here, but seriously. I can understand being pro-choice ONLY when you believe that abortion is NOT murder, thinking that the fetus isn't a life until a certain point. That makes sense, but it doesn't make sense to call it murder and still be pro-choice. How can you argue that an innocent life is lesser than an idea, a choice, a stance. It's different when you risk your life for a cause, it's your life. It's different to kill/defend for a cause in certain circumstances such as war, but there is still limitations and laws that we are supposed to abide by. If we used this logic in other circumstance, our world would be even more evil and unjust. It would be a lot like hell. But an innocent life for a woman's choice... just can't see the life being the "lesser evil". What do you think?

Teething

Ainsley is teething, at last I hope! She is struggling the most at night. She starts to fall asleep and wakes up screaming, I feel so bad for her. She has also started to wake up in the middle of the night, I feel bad for me. I usually will either rock her back to sleep or nurse her... hopefully this won't cause permanent damage to her otherwise amazing sleeping through the night. She definitely is a lot more fussy and whiny during the day then her normal self (which is never unless she's hungry or tired). Ellie thinks she is teething too...

Are Working Mothers Biblical?

The other day, John Piper answered a question concerning if it is biblical for mothers to hold full time jobs outside of the home. I know that a lot of women out there have this question, and a lot of times as Christians we feel conflicted on this issue. Our church seems to have an answer but our society has a different one. It sometimes is hard to discern what is biblical and what is not. John Piper did a decent job at answering the question. Love, love, love this part of his response:
"It is a great and glorious calling to be a mother and a homemaker and a wife and a neighborhood make-it-happen kind of person and a church minister. Who knows what God might be pleased to do."
I am always refreshed and encouraged when I am reminded of what being a stay at home mom is.

Here is Piper's full response:

So I know some of you who read this blog might actually be interested in this question a bit more. Although I loved Piper's response because it encouraged me, I think Doug Wilson answers it better. Doug answers a more general question, should women work outside of the home at all? Check his answer out, he explains a lot more:

Ask Doug: Women working outside the home from Canon Wired on Vimeo.

Rub a Dub Dub

Since Ainsley is now able to sit up, we sometimes let the girls take a bath together. The first time we did this, Ainsley didn't last very long. She was tired and hungry, and did not want to deal with her sister. We tried a second time a few days ago, this time Ainsley did a little bit better.
She shows us that she does not love her sister in the tub at some moments, although she does put up with her extremely well.
I don't blame her though for not being happy with Ellie, I wouldn't want anyone to do this to me either:
Poor thing.

Spaghetti Night

I just love spaghetti! That's what's for dinner tonight. We remove all of Ellie's clothes because the tomato sauce definitely stains. She sure finds it delicious...
Too bad Annie can't have any yet. She sure is cute though:

Strawberry Rhubarb Pie

Our new favorite dessert in our house is Strawberry Rhubarb Pie. The first time a friend brought it over a few months ago, we loved it. After that another friend made it for dessert after dinner, and again we LOVED it (even got seconds).

Well I was trying to think of something I could make for dessert for my dad for a father's day dinner I was cooking him. He doesn't like chocolate, so I decided to make him this pie. It was delicious. You must try it!

Here's a recipe I used but modified a bit: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/food-network-challenge/grandmas-strawberry-rhubarb-pie-recipe/index.html

6 months

Ainsley turned 6 months last Wednesday, I love, love, love this age! She went to the doctor on Monday and weighed in at 18 lbs 5 oz (85%), measured 26 in long (55%), measured 14.6cm around her head (90%). She still is our little chunky baby which I adore! I just love all the rolls and never having to worry about how much she eats! She is just so precious :)

What Ainsley is up to:
-says mama and dada, along with a lot of other babbles. She has just started blabbing this past week and it is so cute. She loves experimenting with her new words and I love listening to it. When she gets upset she always starts yelling mamama.
-sticks out her tongue and blows, blows bubbles
-still a mommy's girl, but enjoys other people as well. If she is hungry or tired, she must have mommy. If she wakes up in the night, who must she have... mommy. If she has trouble going to sleep, who must rock her? mommy. I don't mind, I actually feel really special :)
-rolls from belly to back, still not making it from her back to belly although she tries occasionally.
-reaches for objects, she is a grabber. She tries to grab anything in sight. If you are holding her she will grab your fork, your drink, your plate, your food, your hair, your sunglasses, your face... anything.
-moves objects from one hand to the other
-can pinch small objects (pincher grasp)
-eats anything you put in her mouth.
-sleeps 11-12 hours at night
-has found her toes, she doesn't like to chew on them very much only hold them.
-her favorite things are Ellie and our dog, Kayla. No matter how mad she is, those two will make her smile instantly.
-chews on everything, still no teeth.
-size 3 diapers, wearing 6 months clothes.
-usually has congestion when she wakes up in the morning or from naps. We prop her bed up, but still doesn't help much. Maybe from teething or allergies?
-loves the tv and just stares. It rarely is on, maybe a few time during the week. But if she is can see it, she is enthralled. Not so much with Ellie (Ellie won't sit still, but even as a baby she wasn't interested in the tv).
-still loves her exersaucer. She lights up when she sees it.
-very easy going. She doesn't have much care about anything unless she is hungry or tired. She loves to be held, doesn't mind people touching, talking, blowing, or kissing her. Most of the time she can be tired but won't make much of a fuss and just falls asleep, other times she must be in the car or in her crib.
-thumb sucker to the extreme. Hates the paci, but did take it the other day at church for about 30 seconds. She sucks her thumb a lot during the day, while she is eating, and definitely to go to sleep.
-loves being outdoors. She always likes to swing at the park.
-loves the water. Bath, pool, ocean... loves it.
-very expressive. You can definitely tell what mood she is in by her face. Serious, happy, sad, frustrated... it shows just in her face!
-nurses 5-6 times a day about every 3 hours, no set schedule. She will still take a bottle, just a particular one about 1-2 times a week.
-naps are very inconsistent except for the afternoon nap with Ellie. She almost always will nap 2 hours then. She wakes up around 6:30 or 7:30am and takes a nap after that before Ellie and I head out for the morning. Usually we have to cut it short and wake her up, poor thing. She doesn't seem to mind too much.

I think that's about all. I love this little one so, so dearly. I can't help but shower her with kisses everyday. I'm definitely soaking each moment with her all up because let me tell you, this 2 year old stage is dreadful! Maybe she'll skip it? Only in my dreams...

Enjoy some more pictures:

Don't you just love these cheeks?
Look at the chub, love it!

3 Years!

Today is our three year anniversary! It's kinda crazy to think that we have been only married three years, I mean we already have 2 kids! It definitely seems like forever ago when we said our I do's and moved into our 1 bedroom apartment. Times have changed, and so has our love for each other. We have had some major life events happen these past 3 years, but we have only continued to get closer and closer. Our love has grown and I am so glad I get to share my life with this man.

Potty Training Regress

Our cute little Ellie WAS doing wonderfully at potty training, everything but the poo-poo. Now she has taken a step back, which is somewhat too much for us to handle. She would do great for about 4 days, then do terrible for the next 3, then do great again. When she's not doing well, she has an accident almost every time she needs to potty. It's getting too much for me to handle and I don't want to get frustrated with her anymore than I already have to.

We decided to just stick her back into diapers Sunday afternoon after her fourth accident. I'm not sure if this is the right thing to do, but she hasn't complained yet about how we won't let her go potty. I thought she was ready with how well she did, but maybe not? She was doing great and was basically accident free (excluding poo-poo and at night), but something changed. She's so young that I don't care if she still is in diapers, I wasn't ready anyways because it sure is A LOT of work! We'll see how it goes...

Beach Trip

Last week we went to the beach with Zach's family. It was very last minute and we slept on a sleeper sofa, but we had tons of fun! It was great to spend time with family and have fun in the sun. The girls did great and loved it. We went to the beach and the pool, my favorite was definitely the beach. Ellie was a little hesitant at first with the waves, but I think loved it after she got used to them. Ainsley enjoyed watching the waves and sleeping in her tent, she did absolutely wonderful. Here are some pictures of the week:
